Naples Florida Real Estate: Do The Sting Ray Shuffle Til The Gulf Cools Off!

Do The Sting Ray Shuffle Til The Gulf Cools Off!

Planning on hitting one of the beaches on the Gulf anytime soon?  Water temperatures around our Naples beaches are still in the 70's thanks to La Niña effects which makes for BEAUTIFUL NAPLES BEACH DAYS.  If you go in the water, remember to do the "Sting Ray Shuffle".  No, it's not one of the latest dance crazes you'll find people doing in one of the night clubs at South Beach, Miami.

It's when you shuffle your feet through the sand without actually picking them up to avoid stepping on one of our little creatures.

Just like you, they get mad if you try to squish them and chances are they're little stinger will pack a mean little punch.  So if you shuffle your feet through the sand, chances are you won't step on them but you'll scare them away instead, making for a happier beach experience for everyone involved.

Because they find our Naples beaches as inviting as most of us, they like to take advantage of the warmer waters as well. It's not uncommon to see them resting in the shallow waters on the beach but sometimes they're sneaky enough to bury themselves making them harder to see.  I've only seen one or two since I've lived here and they were almost the same color of our powder white sand...super sneaky!

Now for those of you who wish to sensationalize drama,  There are a few things to point out.  First and foremost, they're not that prevalent and they're typically not aggressive creatures unless you're a crocodile hunter and well...16 other people who met their fate the same way in the last 11 years.  (Read More Here)

Will it hurt if you get zapped?  Yeah!!!...so do your shuffle and you should be fine....unless you lied to your Naples Realtor...and then well...you just might have had it coming to ya! :)

Serving my purpose through content rich informaton about Naples, Florida real estate!

Best Regards!

Shannon, Great advice!  I love to go to the beach but I'm always afraid of the creatures.

ROBERTA:  Truth be known I'm probably not the most brave character out there either.  It helps that you can see the bottom here in Naples!  Of course I get much more brave when I'm on a raft too! :)  Thanks for commenting! :)

Shannon, that beach looks beautiful! It's a balmy 26* here in MI.

Great post!

Shannon that beach looks awesome. One thing missing in that picture is me in a lawn chair drinking a beer!

Shannon, I swam with the stingrays one time and it scared me to death.  I was so afraid I was going to step on one because the current in the ocean was moving my body.  I had to hang on to my husband and hold my breathe while stingrays were all around me and went through my legs.....I will not do that again....but it WAS an experience.

Beautiful, beautiful beach and water!  I did step on a sting ray when I was 12, and ouch it hurt!  The beach where I was at was not particularly beautiful as the water was cloudy, no waves and very, very shallow and apparently filled with crabs and sting rays!  Your "Sting Ray Shuffle" is one very smart move!

Hey Shannon!  I have never been to Florida but have always wanted to.  I am in Southern Cali...which may be similar, but our beaches are not nearly as clean and our water is not nearly as clear!  I will have to fly out there sometime.  What time of year should I go to experience Florida at its best?

Shannon there isn't much of a problem with the sting rays unless you step on one...if someone steps on you...you are gonna smack them too!LOL

I was fishing one year by the Light House on Sanibel Island and had known about the sting rays since I as a kid. A fisherman staying at one of the cottages walked into the water and few seconds later I heard this god awful scream. He had stepped on a ray and it's tail wiped into the back of his calve. His leg swelled up and he was crying in agony. I'll never forget that episode and am very cautious entering the gulf waters.

MIKE:  That's cold but explains why so many more people from Michigan have found my Naples, Florida real estate website lately!  I hope you're bundled up...or maybe you should just come down here and buy a condo! :)

KAY:  It sounds like you were in the Cayman's!  I went there a couple of times.  I LOVED IT!!! We went to Sting Ray City and it was really an amazing experience.  I too was scared to step though! :)  Thanks for your comments! :)

DEBORAH:  Wow!  You're a SURVIVOR!  Sorry to hear about your experience I bet that did hurt!  Did he leave a scar?  Do you show people at cocktail parties and tell them that's your sting ray scar??? :)  I bet people would think...that Deborah girl is smart but boy can she tell a story! :)

JONATHAN:  I know where you live my dear.  I lived there for a year...remember?  I told you that a couple of months ago.  I think you would like it here because it doesn't get as hot as it does there and it doesn't cool off as much at night.  Unless of course you have a problem with rain...then you might not like it so much!  Ehh why don't you just come check it out for yourself and you can tell me if you like it!  By the way, LOTS of Californian's are checking out my part of the woods right now.  It's a new trend that's been going on for awhile.

Will do!  I forgot that you lived out here!  Small world.  I am going to check on flight costs and hotel rates.  Where would you recommend that a visitor to Florida stay?  South Beach?

Posted by Jon Mitchell (Classic Property Management) over 4 years ago
South Beach is two hours from here.  I would recommend...well...I wrote a blog about Naples Florida Accomodations. :)
