Naples Florida Real Estate: What Are You Getting Out Of This?

What Are You Getting Out Of This?

That was a question asked by a gentleman who called today asking for alternative accommodations for his mother who was planning on making a visit to Naples, Florida in January.  He started of by wanting to know where other than the Ritz Carlton he might be able to find a place for her to stay because he was not excited about spending $700.00 per night especially if she plans to stay for the week to ten days he's expecting her to stay.  So we discussed alternative accommodations where I gave him the phone numbers of all the hotels that might fit their requirements.  Read more about the post I wrote regarding accommodations in Naples, Florida

Then he asked about rentals.  He stated that they stayed in a place in Pelican Bay last year for a week but couldn't remember the name of it.  My response was, you may have stayed in a place in Pelican Bay for a week but if you did, you or someone else made those arrangements with a private owner because there are no communities that will allow rentals for less than a 30 day period.  Many of those communities are stricter than that to ward off the unwelcome things that occur with lots of people traveling in and out of buildings etc. He gave me a little more information and I was then able to determine the building that he stayed in.  Still, you're probably not going to find a property manager who can rent out a unit for just a week.  There are REALLY strict guidelines and quite frankly, it's simply not worth it to the owner to get caught not adhering to the rental policy.  A colleague of mine has a client who's dealing with their homeowners association for that very thing...NOT PRETTY!

I gave him a couple of property manager's names and contact information just in case he wanted to give it a shot anyway along with some rental  by owner websites that he might want to check out.  He was a great guy to talk to on the phone.  Great personality, easy going, cheerful...then after all that he says, "what are you getting out of this".  HUH?  he said, "well you're being awfully nice to be doing all of this for nothing".  I joked by telling him that I too lived in Texas for a few years and felt compelled to take care of my own but seriously, sometimes, that's what we do.  We provide a service without expecting anything in return.  Hopefully when that gentleman runs across someone who's thinking about doing something in Naples, he'll be nice enough to drop my name and number and if not...maybe karma will take care of me sometime down the road.

So the answer to "What are you getting out of this"?  So far...a great post for my blog!

Shannon - Good stuff here.  I like this post.  I have had that question posed to me before, but I didn't have a blog then.  This is Real Estate 101.

Hard to believe that we'd be nice for nothing, right?  LOL  It comes back a hundredfold down the road, of that I am sure.

Hey Shannon,

Nice post. Are there not any condos in Naples on the beach that will rent weekly? I know before I moved down here I use to regularly rent a condo on the beach out on Sanibel....I just kid of assumed they did the same thing in Naples, but maybe not.

Shannon,

At times you can't blame people who may feeling suspect at times, yet that doesn't stop someone wonderful like you from helping out. That's something you/we call all continue to do, make a difference one-person-at-a-time, right?

BTW, cute tag line, smart girl....a good one! Keep up the great work.

I get that question all the time when it comes to helping with rentals.

My response " I do it to help my clients, it is just how I work. If you feel like you need to give something to me, feel free to."

Of course that pertains to my limited assistance in finding tenants for rental properties.

Isn't this what we do every day?  Help find a lender, help find an inspector, help find a mover.  I think it's in our nature to help, whether there is a paycheck in the end or not.

I've had that question posed to me before as well, Shannon.  The best answer I have come up with is, "Your future business!"  Thanks for sharing your pro bono story.

SHANNON:  I love the new "Vanna White" picture of you.  I think that many of us do this because we genuinely want to help people.  I had a situation where someone called me about rentals for people in their early 20's.  They didn't have a lot to spend, and the Long Island market is not cheap.  We are not much of a rental market, but if you want to use a broker, it's going to cost you.  I pointed them in the direction of Craig's list and some other places.  It meant more to me to help them then to try and make a few bucks off of it.

ADAM:  I know what you're talking about.  It seems like a LOT of people have that pay it forward concept around here.  I think it's pretty cool.  Thanks for the vote of approval on the picture. It's actually time for a new one but I'll have to think of something funny to do with the Wheel of Fortune! :)

Can I buy a vowel?

Seriously, good for you! Even though you do it out of kindness without expecting anything in return, I believe it will come back to you tenfold.

Hi Shannon, Good post, I recently helped a couple look for a rental also, although I never showed them one, I gave them alot of advice and sent them many rental listings, they ended up finding one from a private owner. They were very grateful for all the work I did for them. I just told them if they know of anyone buying or selling to please give them my number.

Love the Wheel picture, very clever!
